Guest Post and Giveaway: Emily Freeman – You Are An Artist

Several years ago, I took one of those tests to find out what kind of person I am – what jobs I would be good at, what personality traits I have, what makes me basically tick. Even though I was a grown up person, I still longed for someone else to tell me what I was supposed to be doing with my life.

It’s kind of funny the things we do for affirmation. Those type of tests tell us everything we already know about ourselves. If the results show something different than what we believe to be true of us, we become suspect and question the validity of the test all together. Even though we were the ones who answered the questions. For ourselves. About ourselves.

Either way, the test doesn’t challenge or move us to action. It simply states something that already is and gives us some different ways to talk about it. They put what we say about ourselves in someone else’s words. We love to be affirmed in things we already know.

In the test I took years ago, I scored high in the artistic department. I was baffled. Me? An artist? Hardly. I threw out the test in my mind as invalid. Useless. Wrong. But about a year ago, I realized that the test wasn’t wrong at all. Rather my definition of art was.

Art is what happens when you dare to be who you really are.

Art is what comes out when nobody’s looking.

Art is living full right now instead of waiting until later.

Art means believing that the God who created the world with words alone creates with words still. Through us.

Art sounds a lot like laughter, looks a lot like gorgeous, feels a lot like love.

Art feels a lot like worship and it colors the world with grace.

Do we really need to wait for a test to tell us who we are? Do we need to fill out another set of questions about skills and talents and inclinations? Here’s another test to take: Are you made in His image? Were you woven together in the secret place? Do you have the Spirit of the living, loving, creative God living inside you? Then you are an artist. The real question is, what will it take for you to finally believe it?

Website: Chatting At The Sky

As Emily shares here, art colors the world with grace. Grace is the gift we give as photographers, spread grace. We see the old and the ugly and the awkward and the real, and we display the beauty in it all.

We asked Emily to share her art with us today because we wanted an opportunity to celebrate her art, her newly-released book, Grace For the Good Girl. Like a warm blanket on a crisp autumn evening, Emily’s words in Grace for the Good Girl wrap around your soul and bring you home. Emily says about Grace for the Good Girl:

Many of us believe that we are saved by grace–but for too many, that’s the last time grace defines our life. Instead of clinging to grace, we strive for good and believe that the Christian life means hard work and a sweet disposition. As good girls, we focus on the things we can handle, our disciplined lives, and our unshakable good moods. When we fail to measure up to our own impossible standards, we hide behind our good girl masks, determined to keep our weakness a secret.

We are giving away a copy of Emily’s new book this week. One commenter at this post will be chosen at random to win a copy of Emily’s book. You can have an extra entry or two if you tweet and/or Facebook this giveaway, including a link to this post. Just remember to come back and leave us a comment if you do.

The winner will be announced this Friday!

UPDATE: Thanks to random.org we have a winner…. number 35: Caroline Starr Rose!

No. 35 — September 27th, 2011 at 10:48 am edit Hi Emily,
Fun to see you here! These sorts of tests always make me laugh. My pastor husband took one years ago that suggested he be a farmer or a florist. He is not the outdoorsy type. Still humors me all these years later.

Who we are is dependant not on us and for sure not on a test but in who we are in God and what His will is for us. That makes it easier! Not saying i dont know what I want to be when I "grow-up" but I am content where He has me right now and who I am becsaue of Him.

Sometimes it seems too simple and we like complicated because then we have a reason for our reluctance to obey, to risk and dare in life. We create all day everyday…either something beautiful that reflects Him or something that doesn't. Beautifully spoken.

"Art is what comes out when nobody’s looking." I truly live this little saying. (Lord, please hide me while I try to weave your love into my life.) I don't like doing anything while someone is watching me. Whether its washing dishes, folding clothes, cooking, cleaning, or painting.

I was told one time, during prayer by a lady, "Layla, God told me to tell you that you try too hard." I said, "Well, I just don't know how not to try so hard!" This has really brought some insight into my life, and also a great deal of heartache. I can find relief in knowing that God is telling me to rest in Him, that He thinks I am doing a good job. However, I struggle with the fact that I am sort of nerdy and annoying and repeat what others say and don't really carry points to my conversations and how I can't relay my feelings using spoken words…how I should just stay silent…yeah, that one hurt. Anyway, its hard for me to be able to learn the lessons in 'letting go of the try hard life.' Teach me?

Thanks so much for this post. So true that we love to take tests to find affirmation, find out that we do have talents, gifts are unique. How sad is that really that we feel we need a test to tell us that. I'm sitting here – after rumaging through my bedside drawer – where all my treasures reside, and have found exactly what I was looking for. An aged and worn book of Common Prayer. This tiny book, blue leather cover and regal gold print, has been my companion for almost 50 years. It smells of age and wisdom, of times gone by, and times yet to come. The word ART triggered a deliciously warm feeling within me, and I find myself now gently guiding my finger across the words of the Lords Prayer. 'Our Father, which art in heaven…." This was my traditional introduction to prayer, and I still pray these words, in the exact same way, today!

" Art feels a lot like worship and it colors the world with grace"

Thankyou Emily, for reminding me today that by honouring my heartfelt beliefs, I honour myself, and reside with peace and grace within my creative centre. Bless you ~ Wendy xx

Like you, I was also pegged as a creative, artist type…one who apparently had gifts of persuasion to boot. "That's weird," I thought. I was a political science and history major. Artist? Creatively persuasive? Me? Even now, I'm still at the early stages of believing what was there all along. But when nobody's looking? It's all there. It all makes sense. And it's exciting.
